The British School at Rome is delighted to present Winter Open Studios 2024, an evening dedicated to studio visits of artists in residence at the BSR.
The artists will be present with some of their work to answer visitors’ questions and share their research: Aqsa Arif – Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Research Residency, Joe Bates – Ralegh Redford Rome Awardee, Can Gun – Abbey Scholar, Mojan Kavosh – Rome Scholar in Architecture, Jack Killick – Abbey Fellow, Thomas McLucas – Giles Worsley Rome Fellow, Sophio Medoidze – Sainsbury Scholar, Laura Phillips – Creative Wales-BSR Fellow, Cathie Pilkington – Bridget Riley Fellow, Ash Tower – Samstag Scholar in the Visual Arts.
Opening: Wednesday 4 December 18 – 20.30
Thursday 5 December 16 – 19
The Winter Open Studios 2024 will be an opportunity to highlight some aspects of the research that underpins the artists’ work, including the graphic exploration of the tension between object and image in relief sculpture; the script for a film dedicated to Medea, inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s homonymous film and the artist’s visit to a Medieval cave pharmacy in Southern Georgia; the research of epigraphic sources relating to the presence of migrant people in ancient Rome; the investigation of augmented architectural reality through digital media and Baroque mural painting; the study of the improvisation and tangibility of pitch in the work of composer Giacinto Scelsi.
The event represents a different way of experiencing research in progress, that aims to give the audience a broader insight into the artists’ work, to discover their residency projects, their creative practices and, most importantly, to understand how a new environment, meetings and network with the local artistic community, can give rise to new experimentations.
The event will be held in-person. No registration is required to attend.
