THE ITALIAN ART GUIDE

Enter the forbidden city

“Enter the forbidden city“ is a reference to the forbidden city in Beijing. A city within the city which was forbidden for the public for centuries. When the forbidden city opened its gate, it turned into a museum. A Gesamtkunstwerk that was kept in secret was now on public display.

The artist questions: What is a city in your memory? The answe could be: We remember the city as a
feeling related to short happenings frozen in static images moving by in front of our inner eye.
It is an atmosphere reaching out to all senses and if you zoom into this imagination, you may see single objects. The idea of capturing the spirit of a city in static images is built on this concept of memory.

In 2023 Alessandro Rauschmann found 20 equally sized square aluminum plates and started to work on them. 13 of these plates are now shown at Lusvardi Art along with 3 Mobiles and a group of sculptures related to this body of work.

Left overs of urban life which lost their function come together to express their aesthetic and symbolic quality. Such as books which are placed on the streets often labeled with a take away sign instead of getting thrown away directly. These books appear in the assemblages both as ready-made colors and as a text medium to open up a new context.

By taking a step back another layer enters the picture: Mobiles made of found objects move slightly in front of our eyes. It is not only a reference to the motion of the city, the mobiles “watch back”: the shape of eyes appears in various forms and seem to observe us. Just like people crossing the street taking a look at us out of the stream.

Alessandro Rauschmann`s art is ever since he started writing graffiti in 1999 related to the city, he is living and working in Berlin and Milan.

His sculptures and Mobiles are mainly made of found objects, often a combination of only two elements.
In 2004 his first public performance „Cerchio di siringhe“ took place in a street close to Corso Buenos Aires in Milan. He then studied Fine Art at the Universität der Künste Berlin in the class of Prof. Rebecca Horn (2007-2010) and in the class of Prof. Gregor Schneider (2010-2012). The artist owns a “Meisterschüler” degree.

Alessandro Rauschmann is since then a multidisciplinary artist expressing himself in various fields such as:
performance, video, photography, sculpture, painting and collage. In 2020 he premiered the short film “Black Kayak” that won the jury prize of the Filmesque Cinefest New York City.
