It Is Impatient of the Knife

Wisteria Sinensis traces a story, a projection, a desire. It travels through systems of naming, collecting, classifying and imagining. As it moves across geographies, it accumulates meanings that cling to it as persistently as its vines cling to their supports. Botanical knowledge emerges through historical contingencies, cultural translations, econo mic interests and acts of interpretation. Meanings are grafted onto living forms, detached from them, and attached once again elsewhere. What appears as natural is often the sedimentation of countless human gestures.
Introduced to Europe and to the US from China through colonial routes, and celebrated as an exotic ornament, the plant later came to occupy a different position within ecological discourse: no longer a welcomed guest but an invasive presence. Yet the meanings attached to it have never remained stable. They proliferate across poetry, horticulture, folklore, commerce and science, accumulating contradictions.
The installation approaches these unstable histories not as a chronology but as a field of translations. Here, botanical specimens, fragrances, seeds, words and garden implements become
carriers of different ways of tracing the cultural memory of the same plant. Together they suggest that botanical knowledge is neither fixed nor innocent, but continuously shaped by the cultural, political and affective relations through which humans encounter the more-than-human world.
The installation lingers on the unstable relationship between plants and the narratives that surround them. Ornament, specimen, medicine, feared invader: these categories appear less as fixed truths than as temporary agreements, shifting according to place and time. Across a constellation of materials, scents and fragments, the work attends to the moments where botanical histories become entangled with colonial routes, poetic imaginaries and ecological anxieties. It follows the traces of a plant whose meanings continue to proliferate beyond any attempt to contain them.
