AN ELUSIVE ELSEWHERE
The collective exhibition “An Elusive Elsewhere” presents visual and audiovisual installations that depict the intimate realities of people living in the context of the diaspora. The title is taken from Saidiya Hartman’s book Lose Your Mother, where the author states: “The domain of the stranger is always an elusive elsewhere [..]” Ayomide Tejuoso Plantation, Adji Dieye, Okra Collective, and Pablo Rezzonico Bongcam explore the diasporic dimension through different methods and languages, still through the lens of their own experience. It is through the personal dimension and artistic works that a path to re-appropriation of one’s history, places and identity is implemented. “An Elusive Elsewhere” becomes a space beyond national, ethnic, or cultural border, where each individual brings their own voice, memory, and testimony in a process that confronts the audience with the condition of the diaspora, the one of “the perpetual outcast, the coerced migrant, the foreigner, the shamefaced child in the lineage […]”, as Hartman states.
