Tempesta Gallery is pleased to present Ode to Transience, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Chinese artist Zhenlin Zhang (1998). This exhibition brings together a selection of recent oil paintings that delve into universal themes such as separation, memory, and the fleeting nature of human existence.
This poignant series of works focuses on moments of parting and the profound emotions they evoke. Inspired by Tibetan cultural traditions and their philosophical perspective on impermanence, Zhang employs oil painting to explore the ephemeral nature of life, capturing the delicate balance between hope and solitude. The works on display are deeply personal, stemming from the artist’s recent experiences, such as the loss of family members and the challenges surrounding his mother’s health. Yet these individual narratives transcend the personal, offering a universal meditation on life, death, and the connections that endure over time.
“The coldest places in the world are not glaciers but the predestined chill of human skin. Farewells are not merely separations: they are encounters with the profound essence of life, an opportunity to reflect on the fleeting beauty of the most meaningful moments of our existence. My work seeks to honor these transitions, merging hope and solitude with the wisdom of ancestral traditions.”
— Zhenlin Zhang
Mythic iconographies. Tibetan malas. Cerulean tones and crimson glazes. Transitory states, ephemeral and fragile like the human condition—a fluid, ever-changing existence. Just as ocean waves follow one another in perpetual motion, here the painterly gesture, color gradations, and layering create an atmosphere that is volatile, rarefied, and continuously transforming. Zhang’s work inhabits an evanescent, porous, almost dreamlike dimension imbued with a spiritual character that attempts to preserve fleeting instants in time.
Figuration gives way to suspended, metamorphic images that emerge and dissolve, rhythmically structuring the composition through an inexhaustible process of deconstruction and recontextualization. It is a reflection on the concept of loss—a dance between forms and forces, disappearance and presence. An oscillatory tension on the boundary between encounter and separation, abstraction and representation, death and rebirth.
