Susanna D’Aliesio – When the Gods fall asleep

Starting from Friday, August 30, bar.lina is proud to host the solo exhibition of Susanna D’Aliesio, When the Gods Fall Asleep, curated by Andrea Acocella. The exhibition, which marks the opening of the new exhibition season at San Lorenzo’s queer art space, is part of the second edition of the Queer Summer Festival (August 30 to September 15, 2024).

Under the artistic direction of Karma B and Margò Paciotti, the Queer Summer Festival aims to become a key event for a wide audience that is curious and open to new ideas. The chosen subtitle, “Queer the Future,” clearly expresses the intention to look forward, imagining and building a more inclusive and responsible future through art. The festival will take place across various districts of Rome, offering a range of cultural and artistic experiences, from performing arts to music, from talks to installations and contemporary art. It’s a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to explore new perspectives and immerse themselves in an atmosphere of sharing and creativity. The project, conceived by ONDADURTO TEATRO, is the winner of the biennial Public Notice “Estate Romana 2023-2024” by Roma Capitale.

THE EXHIBITION: This photographic project began in the summer of 2023 to denounce the increase in gender-based hate crimes in our country. It stems from the desire to counter an increasingly intolerant humanity toward what is considered different. The project’s goal is to combat social representations such as prejudices and stereotypes, which are constructs of fear and ignorance, with the beauty and knowledge of an alternative world. The idea is to guide the viewer through a journey where they can connect with the realities that transgender people experience every day, providing elements to raise awareness of both the international and national situations and then delve into and discover their stories. Eight portraits, each accompanied by captions. The subjects were free to choose the light and pose that made them feel most comfortable, working towards reclaiming their own image. Each image is paired with a caption representing the story that the subjects chose to share.
