Achille Perilli. Geometrie asimmetriche

From 19th September to 18th October 2024, Ambrosiana Art Gallery is pleased to present “Achille Perilli. Geometrie asimmetriche”, a retrospective dedicated to the Roman artist, organized in collaboration with the Achille Perilli Archive.

The exhibition project, conceived by Andrea Poleschi, features a collection of around twenty works created by Perilli from the 1980s onwards, starting with La girandola sul piano (1981, mixed media on canvas, 50×50 cm) and extending to his later years with Il canto del lupo (2016, mixed media on canvas, 81×65 cm). With this exhibition, Ambrosiana Art Gallery aims to explore unique aspects of the artist’s expressive language, examining his works from new perspectives. From the relationship between geometric shapes and bright colors to the asymmetry that makes his compositions perpetually unconventional; from the complexity of the world evoked by his thought to the apparent simplicity of geometric figures that multiply and expand, contradicting structural order and rational principles.

What stands out with extraordinary freshness in Perilli’s geometric frameworks is the unique quality of his painting: the interplay between monochromatic backgrounds and the surprising complexity of abstract configurations, the vibrancy of color combinations with well-defined flat areas, and the vibrant harmonies among various tones of blue, green, yellow, orange, violet, white and black.

In a 1982 text, Perilli summarized his artistic practice as follows: “Visual tension can only be achieved when multiple contrasting forces find a way to discharge in a single node. When this happens, in a concentrated and tense space like the geometric one, it creates a shift in forces, a collapse of certainties, which is my main concern.”

The project is accompanied by a catalog featuring a critical text by Francesco Poli, which includes reproductions of all the exhibited works.
